What Makes the Lagotto Romagnolo Unique?

The Lagotto Romagnolo has undergone one of the greatest career changes in canine history.

For centuries, its ancestors worked among the marshes of northeastern Italy retrieving waterfowl. Then humans drained much of the wetlands and the Lagotto’s original occupation began disappearing.

Rather than disappearing with it, the breed changed professions.

Its exceptional nose turned it into a specialist truffle hunter capable of detecting valuable fungi hidden underground. That new career eventually became so important that generations of dogs were selected specifically for the task.

Today, beneath those teddy-bear curls is an ancient-style water dog transformed into perhaps the world’s most famous four-legged truffle detector.
